Sam Smith – My man of the hour

I have a secret… It’s a mild Youtube obsession that entails me seeking out Stan Walker singing with friends or whanau. I love the way he interprets music, feeling, emotion. And when he is joined by his crew they really create some magic.

Anyway, today I was checking out Stan’s latest and stumbled across this Sam Smith fellow. Oh my goodness, I am a convert. Sam Smith is a British singer songwriter that not only writes amazing lyrics and melodies but also sounds incredible live (from what I’ve seen on Youtube); perhaps better than he sounds on his album.

He found initial success with Latch and his Disclosure colab (great track) and released his studio album In The Lonely Hour this year. I’m so biased, but I honestly rate every song on this album and have had it on repeat all afternoon.

If you’re keen for a listen, here’s a vid of Sam performing Leave Your Lover live. Love love love this!

p.s. I’ve noticed the search terms directing some readers to this post include “lyrics” so I thought I’d post a link to the lyrics just in case, Leave Your Lover lyrics.

A lesson on Italian hand gestures… from D&G models

I’ve been super busy this week so my posts have been a little bare in terms of content.

Today will be the same but I suspect you will find this video thoroughly enjoyable!

Watch as some of the models from Dolce & Gabbana’s FW15 show, very charmingly, and very handsomely, take you through the intricacies of Italian hand gestures… Who said we needed language anyway! Oooh la la…

I initially stumbled upon this video on swide.com. I really love this lifestyle website, they cover everything from fashion, art, culture, travel, wine, sport etc. Arrgh. It’s so great! Pop over for a wee look if you’re not familiar with Swide, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

I get by with a little help from my friends

Via Astrostyle.com

Via Astrostyle.com

I have had an intense curiosity for astrology for as long as I can remember (since age 11 or 12 I suppose).

I walked around with a very rugged secondhand copy of Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs book for about a year in my mid-20’s, constantly mesmerized by the accuracy and insight into many of the typical traits of friends, colleagues, adversaries, acquaintances according to their respective star signs as described/prescribed by Linda Goodman in this text.

Moving on a good few years and the curiosity remains. I still have the book, albeit safely packed in a storage container back home, but now I refer to a couple of websites regularly for that extra little bit of guidance/advice based on that thing they call the sun sign.

If you’re at all interested my absolute must visit sites are:

Monthly: Susan Millers Astrologyzone.com, this is also a great site to check your compatibility with other signs (nudge nudge wink wink)… Only if you’re interested…!!!

Monthly, Weekly, Daily: Astrostyle.com

FYI I’m a Pisces… and I love being a Pisces. Here are some excerpts taken from Astrology.com‘s definition of a typical Pisces that I totally relate to.

“…selfless, spiritual and very focused on their inner journey. They also place great weight on what they are feeling. Yes, feelings define Pisces, and it’s not uncommon for them to feel their own burdens (and joys) as well as those of others… Many people associate Pisces with dreams and secrets, and it’s a fair association, since those born under this sign feel comfortable in an illusory world… The great strength of the Pisces-born is their compassionate and charitable nature.”

Visit the website to check out if their description  of your sun sign matches you. I’m interested to hear your thoughts!

My 2014 Grammy Award Highlights

Oh my golly gosh! I’m just catching up on the 2014 Grammy performances and did anyone else end up looking like an eye popping + smiley teary emoji after the Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert, Madonna (scream!) and Queen Latifah Same Love colab? Holy shit that was a great piece of story telling and showmanship. I blogged about the significance of Macklemore and Lewis’ Same Love creation last year; my brother kept finding me crying after listening to the song. It took about 6 months for the song to stop having this effect on me! The message is so important and the delivery and reach just so powerful. In my opinion this group of people really pulled off a great thing at the Grammys. Very very Cool.

The other performance that saw my mouth agape was courtesy of Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar.Who would’ve thought? I loved the energy, musicality and intensity of their performance. The percussion was fantastic and the theatrics spot on.

Notable mention has to go to Lorde, the wee treasure that is doing her thing the way she wants to do it (and winning 2 Grammy’s in the process). Miss Yelich-O’Connor you looked amazing, sang like you meant business and endeared yourself to everyone! Oh, ahhhh, would you tell me more about your lipstick….? Diggin it. Totally want it. Where can I buy it? Also, your hair, I’d love to have a turn one day.

American Hustle

Yesterday I had a brainwave and decided it had been too long between visits to the cinema. I popped on my walking shoes, ambled 500m’s to the theatre and bought a ticket to the movie that happened to be starting next. Luckily for me that film was American Hustle.

Nominated for 10 Oscar awards, 10 British Academy Film awards and having already received 3 Golden Globe awards, it is no secret that American Hustle has received a lot of hype… and I was more than curious to find out if that hype was justified.

My verdict re the hype…? Definitely valid!

With a great cast of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper I found the film addictive, riotously funny (don’t know how many times I lol’ed) and superbly costumed. Set in 1978 Bale and Adams characters are cons who get busted by Coopers FBI character. The Bale and Adams characters are given an out by agreeing to help the FBI make another 4 arrests. The story spirals from there bringing Bale’s wife (Lawrence) and Jeremy Renner’s character (Mayor of New Jersey) into prominence.  There is also a Sheikh, the mafia…. and on it goes.

But don’t read about it, go and see it! Here’s the trailer:

Midnight Recovery

I’ve always been into skin care… growing up in a small town in NZ meant lots of weekends with my girlfriends or sisters pampering our skin with facials, manicures, you know the drill. We’d try store bought products and of course had great fun making and sampling home remedies.

But now that I’m in my early 30’s I have really started to take this skin care business a bit more seriously. I’ve noticed small changes on my face and there are areas that certainly require special attention (read the delicate eye area… I smile a lot!). Add to this sensitive skin, a trillion allergies and vitaligo; there is a lot to consider when I am trialing and selecting products.

I’ve routinely returned to Khiel’s products over the past few years so in the interest of sharing and caring let me tell you about my favourite night time product.

Khiel’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. This is a beautiful serum designed to rehydrate and rejuvenate skin overnight. It isn’t at all greasy despite the high oil content (evening primrose and lavender… delicious!) and lasts forever due to the fact you only need to use 2-3 drops. I pop this onto my skin straight after having washed my face just before bed. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning and I feel my skin needs it, I will pop one drop on my cleansed skin under my daytime moisturiser. I love this product forever and ever! Prices for this dreamy concentrate start at $46 USD for a 1 oz bottle (pretty reasonable when you compare to other skin care lines).

I’m also a massive fan of the Midnight Recovery Eye product. Using this with the Concentrate is a wonderful recipe for the skin, and used regularly, I’m pretty convinced of their combined replenishing power!

The Delight of Turkish Kolonya

Turkey is a country with a long history and thus a wonderfully rich culture full of traditions, mystery and great passion.

One of the traditions I have quickly come to love is the use of kolonya. I had noticed an array of glass bottles on my Turkish colleagues desks at the office and often wondered what these bottles contained and what was the intended use.

One day I happened to see the bottle in action; a colleague administered 3-4 quick sharp sprays of the kolonya onto her hands, gave them a good rub and continued on with her work.

This was an entirely new experience for me, never before had I seen such a custom. Obviously I had questions and was delighted to learn that it is common daily practice in both public and private life.

I took to this custom like a duck to water and as per usual set about to find the perfectly scented kolonya for me. After a lot of trial and error (thank goodness it’s inexpensive), I currently have two favourites:

In first place is this Vintage Gardenia kolonya by The Store of Ma. As soon as I smelt it I knew it had to be in my life, there was something about the scent that reminded me of my childhood (my mother’s perfume perhaps) and the packaging is just to die for. Pick this up at The Store of Ma online shop, or if you happen to be in Galata, pop in to gorgeous Lunapark and grab a bottle there. A 200 ml bottle retails at about 28.00 TL.

In second place is Pasabahce’s Cay kolonya. Fresh, clean and super subtle I love this scent when I am hanging out at home and don’t want anything too overpowering. Buy in store or online, a 200 ml bottle will set you back 22.90 TL.

Would love to hear about your favourites!

Miista Boots

Every time I take a trip to a significant shopping destination I make a list of “must buys.” When I went to New York in December that list consisted of the following items:

  1. A beautiful winter coat
  2. Killer black ankle boots
  3. Good solid everyday handbag

Well, for some reason I completely lost my shopping mojo finding it difficult to make even the simplest decisions in places like Forever 21 for crying out loud. It didn’t help that the sales were insane, enticing the keen shopper to get amongst the discount goodness… This really isn’t my kind of shopping, I like peace, serenity… Space.

So I failed miserably when it came to items 1 and 3… However despite the chaos of the Macy’s Boxing Day Sale these wee beauties shone out from the rest (probably because they weren’t on sale… typical):

As you can imagine I was drawn initially to the spectacular heel… How could it be that a delightful combination of structure, design and fun could result in an ultimately comfortable high bootie? It certainly surprised me! And all I know is that Laura Villasenin, founder of Miista, knows a good thing when she designs it.

There is no mucking around with this boot and I loved welcoming the New Year in wearing these boots teamed with a Theory leather mini, an H&M white t-shirt, some good friends and epic sounds and a bottle of cold champagne!

Although I bought these at Macy’s (retail at $299 USD) you can also get them online at www.miista.com (₤225).

Be bold and have lots of fun doing it!
